I-Star & server sorting temp dir

We have two hosts connected using I-Star, if one is acting as the client and the other the server, how is it possible to get the server sqlturbo process (as forked by the sqlexecd daemon) to do any sorting in a directory other than /tmp? I have tried starting up the sqlexed with DBTEMP and TMPDIR set to dir's other than /tmp but this just creates a problem whereby the sqlturbo process can't write *any* sort rows. Note that this is *not* a problem with file system space, dir existance ...
