backup and restore
Posted in 2011
Tom Lehr tried restoring a level 0 backup from AIX 6.1 onto Linux x86 with Informix 11.50.FC7 and got a physical restore failure. Art Kagel said restores work only on the same hardware, OS and Informix version, except HPUX PA-RISC and Itanium. Superboer restored 11.10.FC3X to 11.10.UC3 despite a warning; Art said those are essentially the same version and 32 vs 64 bit does not matter.

hello all we have a level 0 backup to disk from AIX 6.1 and were looking to restore on a Linux x86 (red hat) server, infromix version 11.50.FC7. error comes up as "Physical restore failed - function read archive backup failed code -1 errno 0" can this be accomplished between the two different OS's? or is it a no go like trying to restore a UNIX backup onto a windows system restore? thanks
No. You can only restore on the same hardware, OS, and Informix version under which the archive was made. The ONLY exception is HPUX servers are cross compatible between the PA-RISC and Intel Itanium releases if the Informix version is the same. Art Art S. You can do that because .FC3Xxx and .UC3 are essentially the same version. 32bit versus 64bit doesn't seem to matter, the disk structures are identical. Art Art S.
