I felt the stock Informix documentation was pretty opaque. I found "Using Informix-SQL, Second Edition" by Jonathan Leffler (Addison Wesley ISBN 0-201-56509-9) in a local computer superstore and have been very pleased with it. Much more approachable than the Informix manuals. I dont have any books to recommend if its not ISQL that you're intereested in. For installation and management, I ended up taking the Informix training course, which did a good job of covering things.
