optimizing search routines on large tables..??

I have a table that contains roughly 100,000 records. To perform a simple query on the table can take several minutes. I have been given the task of determining what search techniques, if any exists, can minimize the amount of time it takes to query sets of data from this table. I am using informix 7.0 in conjunction with PB 5.0 so tips using either resource would be appreciated.
