Pretty much anything sucks on NT. :-> There are people who claim to get good stability on NT, but they're few and far between. If you wanted something rock-solid, and you had to choose between Intel/NT and Sparc/Solaris, I'd go with Sparc every time. [Murray Wood] We have clients running on NT. It is very stable, but you must be careful on NT to ensure that the database runs on its own machine - and nothing else. Connect to the database from (another) application server. For simplicity we have NT Terminal Server Edition as an application server, and most problems arise here with clients who want to run other applications (such as office, mail server etc) on the application server. We do concur with OTC that Sun Sparc is our preference of platform. Murray Wood

Hence no compatability problems. No 640K barrier. Also I have seen a documentary on SUn. They visit their suppliers, review how the suppliers do business! and suggest how the supplier can improve their service to Sun! Not just in house quality but they look UP the supply chain and improve things there as well!! Sun have control of their product and control into their supply chain. REAL QUALITY. Check out the help desk. The only supplier I have found with a real IT system behind the help desk. Quote the machine id and their know a) who you are b) who you bought the machine from c) the OS installed d) the configuration e) what additional Sun software is installed. Surely all IT suppliers should work like this??? -- David Williams
For many years we have run Informix Online 5.x with SCO Openserver (versions 3.0 and 5.0.x) on uni-processor Compaq Proliant servers with SMART drive arrays. This is a very stable platform. I can't remember the last time the OS or OnLine crashed -- but its been years. Currently, our system supports 20 users (Win 95/98 PCs with NewEra 2.11) with less than a gig data. I can't vouch for IDS 7.x as we have yet to use it on a production system. Compaq partners with SCO and has drivers and diagnostic software for all its SCO certified products. We have been very satisfied with Compaq hardware and software support. During the past 10 years using four Compaq servers, I had one down 30 minutes to replace a tape drive and another down 30 minutes to replace a memory SIMM. The parts were received within 24 hours.
