Re: Server-side ad hoc querying and reporting tools

Rich I wrote an applet which runs in a browser and allows the user to select a database (alias), either select pre-defined queries or to type a query in and click run. The query and database name is sent to a servlet on the webserver machine which connects to the requested database (may be remote or local), executes the query on the database and sends back the results to the applet, which displays it. Although it was developed on Informix databases, there is no reason it will not run on other JDBC enabled databases. Access to the backend databases that service the queries are done using a JDBC URL, so its only a database change. The control database, where the predefined queries are stored need to be able to support a TEXT datatype, since the SQL queries are stored as TEXT data. There are just 2 tables in the control database. The control database also contain the JDBC URLs corresponding to the database aliases. If you want the code, I will be happy to send it to you - but its a tar file attachment, so I cant send it to the NG. Send me a mail offline if you want it. System requirements: - Java Development Kit 1.1.7 or higher. My version is 1.1.7. - Java Servlet Development Kit 2.0 or higher (Note: if your JDK is 1.2 or higher, then JSDK is probably bundled in the JDK). - Informix (any versoin with support for TEXT data). My version is 7.30.UC8. - Correct version of the JDBC driver for the JDK and the database. My version is Informix JDBC 1.40.JC2. - Java enabled browsers for the user. I use Netscape Communicator version 4.07. I havent been able to get it to work with the MSIE version 5.00 I have. We probably need to do some magic with the OBJECT tag, but not sure about that. It works wih NS 4.07 however. - A webserver. I run Apache version 1.3.6 (Unix). On second thoughts, if a lot of people want it, I will be happy to put it into the repository as well. Any takers? Our JTA System is a legacy system (IBM AIX operating with character- based screens emulating VT100). I need server-side reporting and querying tools to allow users to query our INFORMIX database and request ad hoc reports. Processing must be done by the server. Our users access the system via TELNET! We are currently using SQLAssist with old versions of INFORMIX and IBM AIX OS. SQLAssist is no longer supported. Our OS and DBMS versions are also no longer supported by the vendors. We need new querying and reports tools to allow us to migrate to current versions of INFORMIX and IBM AIX OS. I am looking at iSQL and ACE Report Writer, but I can not determine if they can be integrated into our menuing system and whether they would present security risks. We wish to restrict users to their own database (we have 92 databases). If there are no longer tools to support TELNET access, are there server- side tools to support browser-based access without a client? Our users are throughout the State of California; therefore we do not want to require that they download a client.
