Informix Temp Table Problems

I am developing a Visual Basic app using Intersolve's open driver to connect to an informix 5 database through ODBC. I am having trouble using temp tables. I am able to create them and insert values into them, yet when I do a join using a temp table VB reports error 3078 (unable to find input table or query 'table name'. I am using the same data control to create the temp tables, insert the values and execute the join. The following lines show my methods. SQL$="CREATE TEMP TABLE STATE (STATE CHAR(3))" ROWS%=DATA1.DATABASE.EXECUTESQL(SQL$) SQL$="INSERT INTO STATE VALUES('NJ.')" ROWS%=DATA1.DATABASE.EXECUTESQL(SQL$) SQL$="SELECT * FROM CUSTOMER,STATE WHERE CUSTOMER.STATE=STATE.STATE" DATA1.RECORDSOURCE=SQL$ DATA1.REFRESH 'the refresh produces the error message I would appreciate any response, so far VB, and Informix have not been able to help.
