Informix on NT has slow connections

Hello, all:
We're evaluating Informix 7.23, running on Windows NT 4.0.
We find that when the number of connected users exceeds 100 or so,
the amount of time it takes to instantiate a connection increases
dramatically and sporadically. Specifically, connecting from a Unix(TM)
machine with
isql <database@server> << EOF
select count(*) from <very_short_table>
EOF
goes from around 2 seconds to 8 or 12 to 30. There is no pattern to
the timing values we measure (i.e., they are not monotonically
increasing with system load).
The NT performance monitor shows the system is not heavily loaded
(low disk I/O, cpu's around 30%). We have not been able to determine
whether NT or Informix is the bottleneck. Informix performance, once
the connection is established, is very good (i.e., large queries run
very fast), and other NT applications on the box run without any
apparent degradation as well.
Q: Does anyone out there have any experience with this, and any
insights to share?
Thanks,
jk
