Informix 7 has a DBINFO call that you can use; select DBINFO('sqlca.sqlerrd1') from any_table will return the value of the last inserted serial number. If you're using something prior to Informix 7, or something that tries to parse the SQL before it sends it to the engine, you might be out of luck; it would have to be some JDBC-specific enhancement, I would guess.
