FTP Archive at mathcs.emory.edu
Posted in 1993
The anonymous ftp archive of Informix-related files that I maintain on mathcs.emory.edu (IP 128.140.2.1) has undergone some reorganization. Its top directory is still /pub/informix, though. Newsgroup / Mailing List Archive The directory that holds past articles from this newsgroup and (via the gateway) the Informix mailing list, has been renamed "news". Also, the archiving methods have changed a little. The entire history of comp.databases.informix is still available, plus those messages from the mailing list that predate the newsgroup. However, I have started moving older monthly volumes into compressed tar files to conserve storage. I have also improved the indexing scheme somewhat, but I make no pretense that it is anything other than rudimentary. It is still based solely on Subject lines. There are some sample shell/awk scripts for working with the indexes. Check the README files in the news archive directories for more info. Informix User Group Files The other significant change is that there is now a directory "ugroups", that is dedicated specifically to Informix user groups. One of the ways that local and regional Informix user groups can help each other is to share newsletter articles and any PD or shareware files that they offer. This directory will provide a common place of access to such files. In addition to general files related to user groups, there will be a sub-directory for each user group that wants one. It will mirror files maintained by that group. There are currently directories for the Atlanta, Denver and Washington, DC, groups. Thanks to Cathy Kipp and Lester Knutsen for submitting their respective collections. If your group has files you'd be willing to share, please contact me, even if you're not directly on the Net. This directory structure is designed to augment the efforts by the InformixLink folks to establish a common method of communication for all Informix user groups. In case you haven't heard, they are offering a free account to each user group, and have set up a separate forum/bulletin board specifically for user groups. For more info, contact Trina Clickner <trinac@informix.com>. Retrieving FTP Files Using E-Mail If you don't have access to FTP, you can still retrieve files from the archive via e-mail using one of the sites on the Internet that provide mail servers for use by anyone who can't FTP. Such a server acts as an intermediary that takes your request by e-mail, gets the files you want via FTP from the site that you specify, then e-mails those files back to you. One of the best known FTP mail servers is based at the DEC Western Research Lab in Palo Alto, CA, USA. For more information, send a message consisting of the word "help" to "ftpmail@decwrl.dec.com". Then, using those instructions, GET the files "pub/informix/README" and "pub/informix/ls-lR" as a start. If you have any questions or comments concerning the archive, let me know. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I'll be out of the office until September 27, so hold off till then.
