IDS 12.10.FC- Installation
Posted in 2016
A user installing IDS 12.10 on HP-UX Itanium hit problems bringing the new instance up (rootdbs too small / serial number issues) and asked about onmonitor. Advice: reduce PHYSFILE, LOGFILES and LOGSIZE at startup (minimum rootdbs is now 300MB) and onmonitor is gone in 12.10; a reinstall cleared the errors. Follow-ups: an 11.50 ontape archive can't be restored into 12.10 — use dbexport/dbimport, HPL/external tables, ER, or restore to 11.50 and upgrade in place; move logs with onparams -p / -a / -d (ONCONFIG updates itself); larger page sizes need matching bufferpools and aren't automatically faster.

I'm not sure about the license problem, but this sounds like a possible
problem with the install, environment or permissions perhaps.
For the rootdbs size issue, what have you defined for PHYSFILE, LOGFILES and
LOGSIZE in the configuration? It could be that you have these too large.
It would be best to keep these small when you bring the engine up, then move
them to other dbspaces.
Yes, it is true that onmonitor is no longer available in 12.10.

Check Mike's answer for most of your question. As to minimum rootsize it
was increased from 200MB to 300MB so your config is certainly big enough.

Hi.
I reinstall again informix and not more issues or serial number. Now i just
reduce our physical dbspace & as log as your advice to bring up informix
online.
I will restore data from old version informix (11.50) into latest version
informix (12.10) using #ontape command.
After restored, new informix version (12.10) configuration like log and
physical dbspace will we follow my old configuration right (11.50)?
Do i need to configure again my onconfig file like tempdbs, log number, size &
location and pysical file size & location follow old version?
Thank You
You won't be able to use ontape made from 11.50 to restore to a 12.10
instance.
You need to look at doing a dbexport/dbimport or some other sort of ascii
transfer, or restore to an 11.50 instance and perform an upgrade in place.

You don't have to restore your data from the older version, in fact you
won't be able to. You can't restore an archive with a different version of
Informix. You should, however, be able to just copy the ONCONFIG file,
make a couple of minor changes, and start up v12.10. It will automatically
upgrade the disk structures of the existing files.

Hi,
Thank you for your advice. We plan to upgrade our informix version into our
new server (non place migration), Which best method we can use to migrate data
to reduce our downtime? Right now, i think we can use dbexport & dbimport.
"For the rootdbs size issue, what have you defined for PHYSFILE, LOGFILES and
LOGSIZE in the configuration"
Current rootdbs only 2GB and rigth now we start our db online with min size
for for PHYSFILE, LOGFILES and LOGSIZE configuration.
How to move PHYSFILE and LOGFILES into specific dbspace,
PHYSFILE - move to phydbs
LOGFILES - move to logdbs
and how to increase size for PHYSFILE and LOGFILES, hope u can give sample
command that i can used. After that, did i need to edit config file follow new
PHYSFILE, LOGFILES and LOGSIZE?
Thank You
The method used to migrate your data depends on a number of factors.
dbexport/dbimport is really easy, but will take a long time if the database
is large, plus dbexport will lock your source database during the unload -
something that you may want to preserve data integrity. You can also look
at Art's myexport which will not do the locking.
Otherwise you can look at other ways of exporting and importing the data in
ascii format - such as High Performance Loader (HPL) or external tables, or
other utilities that are available.
The fastest method for you though would likely be to create a 11.50 instance
for your target server, load it with an archive from your source server and
then perform an in-place upgrade there to 12.10.
To move the physical log out of the rootdbs to its own space, create the new
dbspaces and use onparams -p -s <size> -d <newdbspace>
To move the logical logs out of the rootdbs, create the new dbspace(s) and
use onparams -a -d <logdbs> -s <size> : this will create a new logical log
in the new dbspace. Repeat this to add a bunch of logical logs. Run onmode
-l; onmode -c a few times until the current logical log is one of the NEW
spaces (check with onstat -l and look at the chunk number under "begin").
Then drop your old logical logs with onparams -d <lognumber>
Don't worry about updating PHYSFILE, LOGFILES and LOGSIZE in the config file
- that will be taken care of for you.
Setting up a new instance an migrating from an old one, which can be a major
project for a large system with minimal downtime, is a bit much to include
in a post like this.

Forum Note: Use "Reply" to post a response in the discussion forum.
You can use the "onparams" utility to move and resize the physical log and
to create new logical logs in a different dbspace then drop the original
ones. Note that with v12.10 you can create a special physical log dbspace
that will allow the physical log to be automatically expandable (it can
still reside in a "normal" dbspace without the expansion feature).
Onparams will take care of the ONCONFIG file settings for LOGFILES and
PHYSFILE. The LOGSIZE setting in the ONCONFIG is only used as a default
size if you do not specify a size for your logical logs on the onparams
command line (-s <size>).
Note that you can easily recreate your dbspaces and logs from your v11.50
installation to carry over to the v12.10 installation using the dbschema -c
or dbschema -c -ns commands (the former create an SQL API script that uses
API commands to replicate the server's infrastructure, the latter does the
same but creates a shell script that uses onspaces and onparams to do that.
You can take the resulting script over to the new installation and run it
appropriately to recreate the infrastructure you have now. If you prefer to
use my myschema it has a similar option: myschema --infrastructure=cmd or
--infrastructure=sql. If you just specify --infrastructure it defaults to
=cmd.

ER takes a lot of beating, might need some schema mods but easy to do
Cheers

Hi, Thank you for your advice.I will take your advice on my consideration before we do migration. By default page size for dbspaces on HPUX is 2K. Dbspaces address number flags fchunk nchunks pgsize flags owner name c000000042631030 1 0x60001 1 1 2048 N BA informix rootdbs If we used different size for pgsize for another dbspaces as below: Datadbs - 8K Indexdbs - 4K I just know we need more hardisk when we increase page size,it's right? It's true, our performance will be increase when we used pgsize 8K for datadbs? Actually, What main purposed to used bigger pgsize rather than used default pgsize (based on os level) Thank You
Different pages sizes do not necessarily use more hard disk space, and in fact can save space. Having different page sizes can allow you to store records more efficiently. When a record is stored on a page, there will usually be empty space left on that page. Using different pages sizes can be a way of storing the data with less of that wasted space. Also more rows on a page means fewer read operations to retrieve those records. You will need a separate bufferpool configured for each page size that you use. This can have a benefit of keeping some tables separate in cache. For example, if you have a large table storing historical records that perhaps is scanned a lot for reporting. If it has a different page size from your frequently used transactional tables, scans of the history table will not trash the bufferpool of those transactional tables. Just having larger page sizes is no guarantee of better performance. It is however a feature that can be used with careful planning and consideration of placement of tables and indexes to optimize storage and also obtain improved performance.
