Help getting onload to work with Informix 9.21 UC2 (linux)

Guru's,
I am trying to get onload to work on a very old linux box running
RH7.1 & Informix 9.21 (I know it $%^& - I will be upgrading it in the near
future). I have a full backup taken Sunday evening using "onunload -t
/backup/file thedb" that I'm trying to restore to the same box using "onload
-t /backup/file thedb" - the restore runs about 2 hours and then states that
the "tape is out of sequence. Expecting tape number 2". I have tried many
iterations of the onload & all take this same error.
I have RTFM, googled, etc and can't see a solution - would any of you be
able to point me in the right direction?

I debated whether to say something, but I think I have to. Onunload is NOT
a valid archive/backup solution for IDS. It is one way to extract data to a
fairly compact binary format and reload the data later. BTW it is one
solution that I avoid using myself. I just do not trust it. There have
been too many postings like this one over the years.
You should be using ontape or onbar for backups and restores or
dbexport/dbimport or onpload for table/database level safety copies.
