VB/ADO doesn't like Informix 01/01/0001 date

Hi, We have a certain default date of 01/01/0001 on some of our Informix tables. However, day 1 as far as MS are concerned is 01/01/1701 or something. So, when retrieving a 01/01/0001 date (via VB6 and ADO 2.1) I error. I can get around this by casting the field or trapping the error or some such thing, but does anyone have any more elegant solutions to this? I've tried both server and client cursor locations but to no avail. I imagine this has been encountered before so apologies if this has been asked before. Thanks, John
