RE: {Spam?} RE: Is Open Office dying?
Answered: grey (solid confidence) — Extended off-topic flame war about database market share / Open Office; no technical question about Informix.
Advisory only.

Not a technical support thread at all — it's an off-topic flame war that drifted from "Is OpenOffice dying?" into whether IDS would fare better than MySQL as an open-source project. One participant argued the database market is effectively down to Oracle and SQL Server, posting Dice.com job-count figures showing Informix near the bottom; others countered that the Oracle counts were inflated by application (Siebel, PeopleSoft, Hyperion) listings, and accused him of being an Oracle shill. The exchange degenerated into insults and boasts about cars. No technical problem is posed and no resolution is recorded.

There are 2.5 products left in the marketplace. DBAs and developers don't buy database software. Software is purchased by CTOs and CIOs whose criteria are substantially more robust than "what was good a decade ago." You can whip yourself into a foaming frenzy but you're not going to get as large a piece of the market as has Sybase. You're hanging in there ahead of FoxPro. Just for the record, in case someone may take you seriously, this is a database newsgroup and mos of the "jobs" on Dice.com for "Oracle" are for Oracle applications.... Just check the first pages... Also... check: "oracle siebel" - 1102 "oracle weblogic" - 834 "oracle hyperion" - 820 "oracle jd edwards" - 832 "oracle peoplesoft" - 1450 "oracle dba" - 1515 (less than db2?! and less than MySQL?) This (d)nice searches tell us a lot about dice.com and about you too... Once again trying to throw sand into people eyes... typical... useless in my view, but we all know we can count on you for that. Meanwhile "word" and "excel" are very good employment opportunities. Maybe someone running Progress or Sybase should be-itch slap you for ignoring their existence. And to think that the clown admitted to owning a Rolls. Anybody know how much the usage fee is these days? Using your keen analytic skills again Gumby? Here is the list I posted: Oracle 11,886 SQL Server 8,764 DB2 1,806 MySQL 1,548 Sybase 852 <================ Look Here! COBOL 685 Pick 213 RPG 202 PostgreSQL 170 Informix 154 FoxPro 47 rbd 30 Algol 6 I also said ... "You can whip yourself into a foaming frenzy but you're not going to get as large a piece of the market as has Sybase." <====== That is hardly ignoring Sybase which has a substantially stronger place in the market than does Informix by almost any definition and has shown more growth in China, alone, than Informix has worldwide. You outed him as a shill. He bundled all the jobs that said Oracle to imply Oracle DBA. Of course even then, when talking about Oracle, you have to specify either physical or logical DBA since it takes a lot of hand holding to keep Oracle up and running. (Oracle is a pig and doesn't handle resource deadlocking as well as other databases... like IDS) Mark T. may disagree, but I watched a machine fall over and have to be rebooted once a week because the client had too many instances of Oracle running. Now I'm not blaming Oracle, just that the client did something stupid and it took a month to get new hardware so they could remove the heavy load on the server. But getting back to Daniel... he claims he's not a shill, but yet he posts here with nothing to add to a conversation when talking about Informix. As to owning an XJ6, and an 360SL not too terribly difficult to do when you factor in the age of the car, the condition, and where you live. If he really wanted to do some cock waving he should have gotten an H1 Hummer. If he wanted to really show how advanced he was, he should have converted it to an electric hybrid putting electric motors in the wheels, removing the transmission and use that area for the batteries, shrunk the engine to a smaller more efficient turbo diesel and generator. If he wanted to be an uber cock waver, he could replace the skin with carbon fiber components to reduce the weight and maybe put some solar panels on the roof. Then, maybe then, I'd have respect for the tosser. And why an H1? Because its a serious work horse and frankly an electric Frankenstein vehicle would wipe the smugness off of those Prius driver's faces. Yet I digress. -G _________________________________________________________________ Send e-mail faster without improving your typing skills. http://windowslive.com/online/hotmail?ocid=TXT_TAGLM_WL_hotmail_acq_speed_122008
