RE: IIUG launches big Web 2.0 survey for the future of its web site... 7 questions, less than 5 min http://bit.ly/Zk4Ih

JGP... Not at all. I am merely saying is that if the IIUG didn't exist, then IBM would have to either be more open about not supporting Informix outside of their obligations made as part of the sale, or they would have to actually do some real marketing and sales planning. (Again, I'm not sure that the current people who are in charge of WW Sales are capable of doing anything productive.) Said individuals rode the wave of upgrades, and the work of a couple of the BPs and some in the S&D that had Informix experience or saw that IDS would be a faster sale than DB2. ;-) What I see now is that IBM is cresting and that they're going to start to falter and continue to lose overall market market share. This doesn't necessarily mean defections, but that the market could grow faster than their internal growth in terms of net licenses and not percentage of growth. (Remember there are lies, damn lies and statistics. ;-) We can look at DB2 mainframe licenses starting to decline. You don't need to purchase DB2 Mips (very expensive) when you've just migrated their apps off the mainframe on on to SQL Server. Scalability aside, Moore's law works in SQL Server's favor. We're talking about legacy apps that were written 10-20+ years ago and that today's pc's could handle the workload.... (Oh yeah I know both sides of the debate but you get the point.) IBM missed out because DB2 on Z was their sacred cow. What I suggesting is that IBM had better do things beyond funding the IIUG or making minimal attempts at winning hearts and minds. (Gee Universities in KS that are close to Lenexa are not the same thing as gaining a foothold at Harvard, Stanford, MIT (preferably Sloan) just to name a few in the states. (U of Chicago too). But that would take vision, and some financial efforts. Also it would take a strong person in the WW Sales position. Sorry for the quick dump, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. Its now time to walk the doggies and to then go on and have a beer or two. Its been a rough day. ;-) -G PS. Is that what you wanted me to say? I mean Stuart knew all of this yet somehow he's been ineffective in getting a fire lit under IBM's butt. I was referring to the fact that you would have to *pay* someone to do the upgrade to your website. Moving to *web2.0* isn't going to be *free* even if you borrow and customize an existing template. I do agree that it is a good idea. I'm just teasing Stuart. ;-) In truth, the only sad thing is that the IIUG *is* IBM's idea of stealth marketing. I mean if the IIUG didn't exist, then IBM would actually have to do some real things in terms of marketing and sales support. -G Subject: Re: IIUG launches big Web 2.0 survey for the future of its web site... 7 questions, less than 5 min http://bit.ly/Zk4Ih From: jgp@jgp.net Date: Sun, 30 Aug 2009 00:53:40 +0200 CC: informix-list@iiug.org To: im_gumby@hotmail.com we are just doing a survey (please fill it!)... we never said we will change anything :-))).
