FW: This looks almost like a new datablade

Interesting, although if you're looking at monte carlo simulations you'd want to look at Hadoop clusters and possibly hadoop clusters w GPUs. Sorry but looking at an article by Trevor Potts, you can get a dual motherboard box w 2 GPU cards (one per motherboard) super micro box for about 6K. So 5 of these boxes would be the basis for a 10 node cluster (plus NN) for a total cost of 40-50K. (Including a ToR switch) The bottom line is that if you want to do your analytics you're going to want to do the bulk of the processing outside of Informix. Hadoop is now hitting main stream which is why there's a session on Informix and Hadoop at the IIUG conference. Sorry Lester but if you're going to waste your money on Pentaho, you're going to want to run it against Hadoop. Also note that while Pentaho is 'Open Source', most publicly traded companies also buy a support contract. Unfortunately Pentaho isn't cheap. But hey! What do I know? Its not like I've been doing this for a year and a half now... oh wait. I have. :-P And for the Informix crowd, Hadoop is a good thing. You can do your BI in Informix if you've already made an investment in BI tools like Cognos. But if you haven't, you can do your OLTP in Informix and feed the data in to Hadoop/HBase and then number crunch. You can do your BI on Hadoop (Hive) and if you want Pentaho. So Informix is still your system of record. Very good for things like point of sale systems in large retailers (Kroger, HomeDepot, Sears, Wal*Mart...) [Alphabetical Order and just to name a few.] Then you do your analysis elsewhere. This is to say that your Informix investment is your system of records and you're using a lower TCO system for your analysis. But hey! What do I know? I'm just a solutions architect, and not some talking head at IBM who know's enough to put together a power point deck but has never really used the technology in the field. ;-) -G > Date: Thu, 17 Mar 2011 22:08:37 +0000 > From: obnoxio@serendipita.com > To: informix-list@iiug.org > Subject: This looks almost like a new datablade > > http://www.fuzzyl.com/news/press-releases/fuzzy-logix-and-ibm-unveil-in-database-analytics-for-ibm-informix/ > > -- > Cheers, > Obnoxio The Clown > > http://obotheclown.blogspot.com > I will now proceed to pleasure myself with this fish. > _______________________________________________ > Informix-list mailing list > Informix-list@iiug.org > http://www.iiug.org/mailman/listinfo/informix-list
