oninit startup failure
Posted in 2007
A user couldn't start IBM IDS 10 on Windows XP Pro SP2: the Informix service aborts shortly after starting, and running 'oninit -sv' shows startup getting as far as allocating shared memory and the buffer pool, then 'Initializing rhead structure...FAILED' with 'oninit: Fatal error in shared memory creation', while the instance log shows 'vp_create: cannot initialize semaphore'. The full ONCONFIG was posted. Replies only asked diagnostic questions (new vs. existing instance, memory/disk, exact version, local vs. Remote Desktop, whether informix is an Administrator) and clarified that 'rhead' is the RSAM head control block in shared memory, not read-ahead. No resolution is recorded in the thread.

Hello all,
I am getting mad with a problem on which I already spent 3 days, and it
would be nice to give me a clue to solve it:
I am trying to start IDS v10 on Windows XP Pro SP2, but the "Informix
server - ol_xxx" service begins to start, then aborts after a short time.
I reproduced the problem on a command prompt, with oninit -sv, and I can
see that the server fails when initializing the rhead structure:
Checking group membership to determine server run mode...succeeded
Reading configuration file
'C:\\PROGRA~1\\IBM\\Informix/etc/ONCONFIG.ol_dl49'...succeeded
Creating INFXTMP/.infxdirs...succeeded
Creating infos file
"C:\\PROGRA~1\\IBM\\Informix/etc/.infos.ol_dl49"...succeeded
Linking conf file "C:\\PROGRA~1\\IBM\\Informix/etc/.conf.ol_dl49"...succeeded
Writing to infos file...succeeded
Checking config parameters...succeeded
Allocating and attaching to shared memory...succeeded
Creating resident pool 868 kbytes...succeeded
Allocating 20384 kbytes for buffer pool of 4K page size...succeeded
Initializing rhead structure...FAILED
oninit: Fatal error in shared memory creation
In the server instance log file (INFORMIXDIR\\ol_xxx.log), I get:
vp_create: cannot initialize semaphore
Any idea to help me to understand what the problem is ?
Thanks in advance,
MFLD

Is this the first time you've tried initializing after installation or
is this an existing instance which has just stopped working?
How much physical memory on this machine? Disk space ok?
What is the exact IDS 10 version? Are you running this directly or via
Remote Desktop or some other remote control software?
Assuming you're running oninit as user informix, is informix an
Administrator on this machine?

rhead is the main control block in shared memory. It stands for RSAM Head.

In response to Guy,
Some asked details about my case:
Is this the first time you've tried initializing after installation or
is this an existing instance which has just stopped working?
---> It is the first time I initialize the server
How much physical memory on this machine?
---> 2 GB of physical memory
Disk space ok?
---> Yes, more than 30 GB free
What is the exact IDS 10 version?
---> 10.00.TC3
Are you running this directly or via Remote Desktop or some other remote
control software?
---> Running oninit directly on the command line
Assuming you're running oninit as user informix, is informix an
Administrator on this machine?
---> Yes, running oninit as Informix user, member of the Administrators
and Informix-Admin groups
Correction: the exact low level error message is:
create_vp : cannot allocate semaphore
Since it looks like a resource allocation problem, I enabled the Windows
audit to monitor the access to the system objects, and I see no failed
event in the security log.
I also spied the oninit process with FileMon and RegMon, but I did not
detect any problem while accessing the files or the registry.
Any additional check to do ?
