Input indicator variables to force data conversion?

Does online 7.1 support using input indicator variables as a way to force conversion of input data? There is little in the manual to suggest this, however if IBM==ANSI and Informix sort= ANSI I thought this might work. -- Adrian Blakey Big Book Inc.
