Re: Disk Sizes

The temptation of partitioning the 9GB drives to multiple 2/4GB drives is un-bearable - I know I've been there. And its easy to forget what's where unless you document (?!?!?!?!) where everything is. Unless you have a genuine reason to put large files or indexes on a 9GB disk, as you quite rightly pointed out, more disks are better (spindles etc... ) to spread a little happiness ( sorry, workload !! ). If money isn't an issue, stack em up !! The main parts that really need to be on separate disks are:- DBSpace # Disks rootdbs ( mirrored to another physical device ) 2 loglogdbs ( not essential to mirror them ) 1 phylogdbs ( mirrored to another physical device ) 2 tempdbs 1 datadbs ( mirrored to another physical device) 2 indexdbs ( mirrored to another physical device ) 2 TOTAL 10 ( minimum ) This is, of course, a nice situation to be in, but then again, if you spend all that money on a decent database engine, why skimp on the tools to make it better ?? Also, if the disks are sharing a disk controller, you will still get contention in IO as all IO will be going through the same controller - you may want to consider other disk controllers as well. Sean P.S. Your vendor probably doesn't know a lot about the integral parts on Informix OnLine !!
