Finding non-printing characters in data

HP-UX 11.0 IDS 9.21.HC4 Just wondering if there is a simple way to find non-printing characters embedded in char fields. I have tried to match on the hex characters but it is actually a substring that I am looking for. Is there a function to convert HEX back to character??? What I need is something like this (except this doesn't work...) table1 ( field1 char(10), field2 char(100) ); Select field1, field2 from table1 where field2 like (some Hex value); I know I am way off.
