Creating new informix instances is quite easy, and basically is exactly the
same as setting up the primary instance. All the binaries & directories are
the same, only the onconfig and the database spaces need to be different.
You need to do the following:
1. hard link oninit to oninit-<instance_name> - This allows you to see what
instances are using CPU etc in top etc.
2. Allocate disk space - requirements are exactly the same as for your
initial instance
3. Copy and edit accordingly your onconfig file, you will need to change the
rootdbs, servernum and log file parameters at least. (Here is a diff of two
onconfig files for separe instances on the same machine that I have running)
css[cssfe_u10][338]% diff $INFORMIXDIR/etc/onconfig.css_u10
$INFORMIXDIR/etc/onconfig.cssfe_u10

< ROOTPATH /data/css_root # Path for device containing root dbspace

< MSGPATH /home/informix/logs/css_u10.log # System
message log file path
---
> MSGPATH /home/informix/logs/cssfe_u10.log # System

< SERVERNUM 5 # Unique id corresponding to a OnLine instance
< DBSERVERNAME css_u10 # Name of default database server
< DBSERVERALIASES css_u10soc,css_u10shm # List of alternate
dbservernames

> DBSERVERNAME cssfe_u10 # Name of default database server> DBSERVERALIASES cssfe_u10soc,cssfe_u10shm # List of alternate
dbservernames
4. Add the new instance to the sqlhosts file, and add any services to
/etc/services.
5. You may need to add more semaphores to your kernal, also check the
maxuprc parameter, as each instance require a number of processes.
6. You should then be able to set INFORMIXDIR (probably to the same value as
for the first instance), INFORMIXSERVER, and ONCONFIG parameters.
7. you can now do an oninit-<instancename> -i
8. Your client apps will have to have the INFORMIXSERVER variable set
accordingly to which instance they want to connect to.
Thats basically it.
HTH!
