I WOOULD NOT suggest doing that. I think the terminal dedication is the
price you pay for using ontape. It does a few things for you. When you
cancel ontape -c you get a report of logs on the tape involved and you can be
reasonable certain that the cancel happened properly.

You can automate returns as follows:
As I said we don't automate ontape -c, but we do allow redirection of
input for archive purposes. However we only do this to free up the
terminal we start them from and to control the output information from
the archive process.
ontape -s -L 0 < archive.input \\
>> archive.out 2>> archive.out
In this example archive.input contains 2 "0a" entries.
the archive.out file will carry the messages that would appear on
the console if you were runing the archive interactively.
nohup archive.sh &
archive.sh contains the ontape you see above.
