Adding space to rootdbs
Posted in 2005
A DBA asked whether it's safe to add a second chunk to a 30MB rootdbs that was over 80% full (IDS 9.21 on Linux). Replies confirmed there is no problem: a chunk can be added to rootdbs just like any other dbspace. Respondents also suggested investigating why rootdbs was filling — moving the physical and logical logs to their own dbspaces, creating temp dbspaces, and relocating user databases/large tables created by default in rootdbs (check with oncheck -pe). The thread then drifted into a side discussion about whether separate dbspaces and Informix mirroring are worthwhile when only one (OS-mirrored) drive is available, which ended without consensus.

I have a root dbspace that is 30MB and have less than 20% free space. Are there any issues to just adding another chunk to the rootdbs? I have added chunks to other dbspaces before but never to a root dbspace. We plan on upgrading this server to IDS 10 later this year. Currently it is IDS 9.21.UC4 running on Linux. There is no problem with adding chunks to rootdbs the same way as any
other. What you might want to investigate is why your rootdbs is
getting full (or is so full).
Have you created a specific dbspace for your physical log and moving it?
have you created a specific space for your logical log files and relocated
them?
Have you created temper dbspaces to hold your temp tables and sort files?
Were any of your databases (except the system ones) created in the rootdbs
(the default location)?
have you got any large table in the rootdbs (oncheck -pe) that are growing
and could be re-located?

My problem is that I am
only given one drive to work with.
It is mirrored by Windows 2003, so it is actually 2 drives, but appears as
one.
I went to the trouble to allocate spaces for everything, as Informix
recommends,
but when the machine was hit by hackers, and I had to reload the box,
I used 6gb rootspace and mirrored it (on the same drive).
The space is less than 1/3 used after 2 years of running.
This is all OLTP.
There are about 3000 columns in about 300 tables.
Would it have done any good to have separate spaces when there is only
one (physical) drive ?

From a logical aspect, yes. From a physical and common sense aspect you've

Not
sure I agree totally :-)
Even with one drive you will get some protection (from rootdbs
filling up) if you separate logical logs out and data.
Mirroring to the same drive is literally a waste of space, a
sense of security and a performance hit!.
Windows is already giving you the protection against drive loss
and the (minimal) read performance, why inflict four writes on
the system when onlty two are needed !!

I agree
that it is a peformance hit, but the Windows mirror just protects
you from
a drive crash.
If a space goes bad, you get 2 copies of the space that is down.
You must resort to a restore. ;-{
