RE: {Spam?} RE: {Spam?} RE: Is Open Office dying?

Sigh. Ok, lets put it this way... With the Open Source movement around MySQL starting to fragment, its future is called in to question. Sun Microsystems now owns the code stream and can do with it what it wants. While there is a code stream that is open sourced, it doesn't mean that Sun will continue to support it. Or that they will put in all the latest and greatest features that they will put in to a paid for release. I'm not suggesting that Sun do this or that they will do this. All I am saying is that they have the right to do this. There are those in the OS community that don't want to work with Sun. After all, Sun has a pay for the license mentality. They will attempt to fork the distribution. In doing so, they splinter the community. Under tough economic times, you can bet that those in the OS community will put a priority on their day jobs and forgo the OS playtime. In addition, not everything in a database server is straightforward and easy to design. So as IDS/DB2 , Oracle and other 'pay to play' databases advance their technology, the pure 'Open Source' databases will fall behind. They will fill a niche, but they will not maintain the support and popularity over the long run. IDS? IDS still has a strong core following. Even though Janet could not overtly kill IDS, she did do some damage which has yet to be repaired. In spite of this, IDS is still growing as a product and has seen some growth in their user base. (No, we don't know the numbers because IBM doesn't break out the numbers.) So IBM will keep supporting IDS because it still makes them money. If OS MySQL splitners, you can bet it will wain in popularity. For OS software to succeed there has to be a certain size to their community members supporting the product. Fall below that minimum number, and you're toast. Does that make sense? Meaning that IDS has a roadmap and a dedicated support team. MySQL as an OpenSource product does not have said base. > Date: Mon, 29 Dec 2008 17:45:39 +0000 > From: obnoxio@serendipita.com > CC: informix-list@iiug.org > Subject: Re: {Spam?} RE: {Spam?} RE: Is Open Office dying? > > Ian Michael Gumby wrote: > > > > > > > Date: Mon, 29 Dec 2008 13:38:08 +0000 > > > From: obnoxio@serendipita.com > > > CC: informix-list@iiug.org > > > Subject: Re: {Spam?} RE: Is Open Office dying? > > > > > > This is why IDS, sans marketing, has a better future as MySQL as an OS > > > > project. > > > > > > I'm feeling a little slow today, IBM is doing a cracking job of > > > developing IDS, the one thing they are doing right, so we should chuck > > > it out into the wild and let a bunch of college students take over the > > > development.
