Password igored for remote JDBC connection

My Informix server (ODS 7.23 on Solaris) is allowing ANY password to work for a remote JDBC connection using Borland's DataGateway. It will not allow a username that is not known to the UNIX system, but if you enter a valid username, you can enter anything you want for a password and still get connected with the permissions for the username in question. HELP!!! --Jeff
