Re: How to kill processes in SE 7.1
Posted in 1997
You shouldn't normally have to kill anything.
What's the reason you have killed programs, and why to you expect to
have to continue to do so?

What is an sql-process?
If you refer to the sqlexec process that is automatically started when
you run a program (dbaccess, 4gl program or whatever) you shouldn't
ever try to kill this.
You shouldn't have to either. You should kill the application program
instead.
: In the faq I read that kill -9 should be
:avoided,
:(although we did several times) but there is no alternative mentioned.
The faq spesifically refers to OnLine, not SE (I believe). At least
that's where the main issue is.
On SE you should normally kill the application program, and the
sqlexec process should dissapear automatically. We have allways used
kill -9 for this with no detrimental effects. (This is true for OnLine
as well as long as it's an application process, not a database one,
you kill.)
:Do you have an suggestions ?
:we are useing SE 7.1 under AIX 4.1.
:Any help much appreciated. Thanks
:nb: what can we do to check whether our previous kill-9 attempts destroyed
:anything.
You have to check the integrity of your database.
You can use secheck (or bcheck) for indexes and a rudimentary check of
the data.
Additionally you will have to use sql to check for any missing data.
But what did you actually kill? The sqlexec process.
:Sorry for thes maybe stupid questions but we are quite new to Informix
:(and sql at all). Also apologize my poor english
No appology needed, just some more explanations.
