You will need to carve up your 1GB memory between OS, instance 1 and instance 2. This will almost certainly reduce the number of buffers and locks for each instance. This will be a performance hit. While once instance is working its nuts off the other is doing nothing with a couple of hundred MB of buffers doing nothing. The OS will need to share CPU resource between the 2 instances. I do not think it can do this as well as the Informix engine in 1 instance. Our rule of thumb is only one instance for production boxes.
