I reported this particular occurrence in March as bug #12347. In that particular case, the cause was that a strange out-of-sync condition occurred in the database: the number of indexes for a given table (as listed in the sysindexes catalog table) didn't equal the value of the nindexes column in systables. You might try checking these figures for the referenced table and update nindexes (carefully! as informix) if necessary, as you choked on the same line number that my case did. fecat.ec is a tools library module which ends up in lib4gl.a.
