[?]Interval to decimal conversion: how.

Dear Net.Wisdom, I have a situation where I need to take an interval stored as a decimal, convert it to an interval, allow a user to update this value, convert the new value back to decimal and store the result back to the table. I can convert from decimal to interval, however I don't see any easy way to convert back to decimal from interval. I expect I could put the interval into a string then parse the string, but this just doesn't seem elegant. Any ideas?
