Anybody keep sysdefaults & syscolval in sync?

I've just been playing about with defining default values for columns. It seems to me that there are TWO distinct methods for doing this: 1. syscolval (via upscol) lets me define default values for use in a form 2. sysdefaults (via ALTER TABLE) lets me define default values when doing an INSERT. Questions: Has anybody written something to update one with the other (so I don't have to setup default values twice) [normalisation, remember] Do I really have to setup my INSERT defaults via ALTER TABLE? It's really tedious having to redecare the column type, given than I don't want to change it.
