ontape problem on IDS9.4FC5 for AIX
Posted in 2009
Poster on IDS 9.40FC5 (AIX) couldn't make an ontape backup to a disk file exceed 2GB, even after setting the informix user's hard and soft file-size limits to unlimited via smitty. Suggestions: pipe ontape output through a named pipe to cat/gzip (and test the restore carefully, since ontape reads the file twice); check that onconfig TAPESIZE/LTAPESIZE aren't capped around 2048 (2GB); and note that releases before 9.40 lack large-file support. The poster doubted named pipes work before IDS 10; others reported success on HP-UX and Solaris. No confirmed resolution is recorded in the thread.

Hello,
I want to backup the instance through ontape, but IDS report error when the
backup target file large than 2Gb, I have change the following property of the
informix user to -1 through smitty .
1) hard limit;
2) soft limit;
any suggestion will be welcomed.
Hi,
for file backups larger than 2 GB you have to use a named pipe (ontape writing
to the pipe and some other process (cat or gzip) reading from it.
In that case you should test your restore procedure very well, because you
will have to use a pipe for restore, too (ontape reads the file/pipe two times
in the case of a restore and block size might matter).

Andreas

PLEASE POST VERSION AND PLAFORM
INFORMATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Versions of IDS earlier than 9.40 do not support files larger than 2GB. I
suspect, but don't know since you didn't post your version info, that you
are using an earlier version. You've probably been told this already (but
who can remember) your release of IDS is likely out of support and you
should upgrade. Many of the problems you are having would go away if you
had a current release.

From the IDS document, I know ontape cann't backup to named pipe in version
9.4, from IDS 10,it has no problem to use named pipe.
Hi,
it can !!! We do that for a lot of our databases - and we did a lot of
successful restores, too (at least on HPUX - but I don't think that the UNIX
flavor will matter).

Andreas

Hi,
we are using ontape with 9.40 for backup to disk and backup to tape on
Solaris, no problem with 2 Gb limits.
Maybe looks stupid, but what are your TAPExxxx parameters in the onconfig file
?
TAPESIZE and LTAPESIZE are not on 2048 I suppose ?

Jacques
