Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.
This is an opinion thread rather than a technical one. Participants debate whether IBM's acquisition of Informix benefited anyone: one poster argues Informix's independence ended when IBM made shareholders an offer they couldn't refuse, and that acquiring good people and technology means nothing if IBM then does nothing with it. Another counters that IBM is doing something, just perhaps not what Informix DBAs and developers want, and that time will tell. The exchange descends into jokes about IBM 'sitting on' Informix and choosing between DB2 and Oracle. No technical problem is posed and no resolution is reached.

Unfortunately not enough of them for Informix to remain viable as an
independent.
We'll never know, will we?
IBM made the Informix shareholders they couldn't refuse, and Informix's
independence was gone.
Certainly the company had been struggling for some years.
But it's highly arguable whether Informix *customers* have benefited from
the IBM takeover. Or IBM in fact.
>> Well IBM certainly got their hands on some good people and some good
technology. In that sense they
benefited ...
Sorry to go on about this, and I sense we're discussing theis point in
circles, but there's no benefit to be accrued simply by acquiring the good
people and technology and then doing nothing with it .....

They are doing something with what the acquired. It just may not be what
Informix developers and DBAs want: Time will tell.

I think I might take up a new career.
