Informix V7.24 UC6 on HP-UX10.20: We've recently upgraded from Informix v7.13 - v7.24. After many problems getting this version of Informix to work at all on our production box, we were provided by HP with a fix whereby we had to set RESIDENT=1 and reduce the size of our buffer cache. We're using the converted server to run the Lawson Financial application and, since the upgrade, it's been running like a dog. Our nightly batch, which last week ws taking 2-3 hours, is now taking 5-6, and this is causing us operational difficulties. It's possible that the problem is caused by Lawson's software, and we are pusuing the issue with them also. But does anyone have any bad experiences with regard to performance on v7.24, and/or have some suggestions of things we could try? Thanks Neil Truby Londis Holdings (UK)
We have the pleasure (?) of running Lawson with Informix 7.24 here, and
there are a few limited things you can do to help performance.
The first is to intelligently distribute your data across multiple physical
disks. GLTRANS tends to get large and get a lot of accesses, so if you can
put it on a disk by itself (a _physical_ disk, not a logical one), great.
Next would be to detach the indexes, and put them in spaces other than where
the tables themselves lie. So if GLTRANS is on disk A, put its indexes on
Disk B.
There are a couple of specific processes (like AP90) for which we had to
create custom indexes, over and above the standard ones that Lawson creates.
And despite what Informix tells you, you should NOT run UPDATE STATISTICS
against the Lawson tables.
Last, as Gabriela pointed out, moving to 7.3x will help immensely, because
7.3x has optimizer directives, which Lawson 7 takes advantage of. (If
you're ever doing an 'onstat -g sql' and see stuff like
"{+INDEX(APINVOICE,apiset1)}" buried in the SQL, that's an optimizer
directive, telling it to prefer the index "apiset1" on table APINVOICE.)
