perm_r.4gi hangs?

Hi folks, this is my first time posting on this board. I am a complete ignorant about Informix. I got called in to troubleshoot an old SCO box which was misbehaving. I managed to track the problem down to a script called perm_m which was making the following call: fglgo $BASE/ADM/EXE/perm_r.4gi $DBNAME $HOME This call just sits there and hangs. What is it trying to do? I have no way of knowing and I hope one of you fine folks might be able to help me. I commented out the above line in the script and the database application (which called itself 'Echo') seems to start up fine. This is IDS 7.30.UC2 (Very old, I know).

See if you can find a file somewhere called perm_r.4gl -- this will contain the source code for the program above and it should be easy enough to read. If you can't find the source, then you might try running strings $BASE/ADM/EXE/perm_r.4gi Which will tell you some of the contents of the file, but it's unlikely to give you enough detail to work it out completely. It may be that one of the environment variables (DBNAME or HOME) isn't set correctly? > I commented out the above line in the script and the database application > (which called itself 'Echo') seems to start up fine. > > This is IDS 7.30.UC2 (Very old, I know). -- Bye now, Obnoxio "C'est pas parce qu'on n'a rien à dire qu'il faut fermer sa gueule" - Coluche "I'm trying to see things your way, but I can't get my head up my ass" - JCH "Ogni uomo mi guarda come se fossi una testa di cazzo" - Marco Travel broadens a person. Try to get someone who knows informix and 4gl becuase fglgo $BASE/ADM/EXE/perm_r.4gi $DBNAME $HOME Is trying to execute a 4gl program, and it hangs. Look for $BASE/ADM/EXE/perm_r.4gl that's the source of the program that hangs. If you hace the Informix 4gl debugger installed issue: fgldb $BASE/ADM/EXE/perm_r.4gi $DBNAME $HOME And you can debig the program... but as I said you will need to have someone who knows informix. J. After mucking with it for what seemed like an eternity, I figured out what was
wrong. I was dealing with a "logical logs are full" situation. So I read up on
"ontape" and eventually configured it with "onmonitor" and performed a "ontape
-a" which unblocked the system.
Thanks to all who replied. It's been a learning experience.
Rached,
Wow... talk about a blast from the past... I believe that the "Echo"
application is actually something from a company that (at least used to)
calls itself Echo Management Group. I used to work for that company MANY
years ago. I can't remember specifically what perm_r.4gi does, but I can
tell you that it's not part of the Informix core application.
I wish I could give you better information about what the routine does; from
the name, and from vague recollection, I'd assume that it's part of the
permission scheme within the application. I'd look at the database schema,
look for permission tables, and then use onstat to determine what SQL is
causing the application to hang. It might be that there are locks, and
setting the lock mode to wait 30 seconds rather than indefinitely will solve
your problem.
I don't know if the company is still around, but if they are, you might want
to contact their technical support to find out what the routine does.
Alternatively, the "strings" command is your friend; as I recall they didn't
do much to "hide" the SQL from a "strings" statement.
Good luck!

Subject: perm_r.4gi hangs? [4779]
Hi folks, this is my first time posting on this board.
I am a complete ignorant about Informix. I got called in to troubleshoot an
old SCO box which was misbehaving. I managed to track the problem down to a
script called perm_m which was making the following call:
fglgo $BASE/ADM/EXE/perm_r.4gi $DBNAME $HOME
This call just sits there and hangs. What is it trying to do? I have no
way of knowing and I hope one of you fine folks might be able to help me.
I commented out the above line in the script and the database application
(which called itself 'Echo') seems to start up fine.
This is IDS 7.30.UC2 (Very old, I know).
