You could use BETWEEN but a) it would be very costly (SQLEXPLAIN) and b) you would have to know the exact number of digits in order to make up the SQL dynamically. (i.e. where ord_num is BETWEEN ? and ? passing in '500' and '600' as values) (just an example). Good luck and I agree with the thought of re-thinking why this is being done...
