Ordering data regardless of case
Posted in 1994
Just wondering what folks do... suppose one has a database table with a list of customer names. Further suppose that the names have a mixture of upper and lower case in the first character. How does one sort it properly? The right answer of course is clean up the data and subsequently have applications enforce strict rules as to case for insert and update. We're not interested in the, "right" answer however, just the practical one, i.e. is there anyway to select data from a column and have it ordered, regardless of case? Thanks for any info. We're running 7.00.UC4 on Sequent 2000 machines, though this problem should apply to any level and any platform. Have thought about NLS, but that solution seems rather drastic for such a simple problem... -- Scott F.
