Re: Very old page bug

If you can update your tables in batches (#tables/#backups/old_page_cycle), you can force the engine to always have a few old pages to deal with, this will make you 20 minute nightly backup into a 60 minute backup (perhaps) but it will even it out across the spectrum. Sorry - I'm tired. Say that you get the old-page syndrome every 3 months. Say also that you do a full backup every week This means (roughly) 12 full backups (at one hour each) followed by one slow backup (10 hours) every 13th week. If you split the database into 13 size-equivalent pieces, and force 1/13th of them to be updated every 13 weeks in cycle (so week 1 - update 1/13th of the tables, week 2 - update the second 13th, etc.- mind you you only have to do this for the entire database once (or rather 13 * 1/13th times)) - then every week you will have 1/13th of the tables show up as old and trigger the old-page 'bug'. So your 1 hour backup will turn into 1h45min backups across the entire 13 week cycle. Thus, not avoiding the old-page 'bug' but embracing it, and leveling it across your schedule. hope that made sense. cheers j. sending to informix-list
