The consensus at the time was that people didn't want a split. Many would read both (or all) groups anyway so it wouldn't help much. For these the high number of crossposts that would result would be very anoying. For those with limited interests it might be usefull, but the traffic on c.d.i. isn't too high so it's managable to have only one group.
