In a nutshell, there are two types of replication for Informix-Online 7.1: High-Availability Replication and Discrete Data Replication. (DDR) High-availability Replication (available in version 6.0 or higher) replicates an entire server to another. Here at our Informix office in Kansas City, we replicate two 300-user HP servers to two identical HP servers. The secondary server can be used as an emergency backup if the primary server fails, and as a read-only production server. We run our read-only programs (reports) off the secondary servers, which frees up the primary servers for read-write (OLTP) applications. It works great, it is relatively easy to install and maintain, and it comes with the product at no additional charge. Your secondary server hardware must basically be identical to your primary server. DDR (Online 7.1) allows you to replicate tables and even parts of tables. With Informix-Online version 5.01 or higher, you can use Stored Procedures and Triggers to replicate tables. For more information, get a product brief off the new web server (http:/www.informix.com), or contact your dealer or Informix rep.
