Help! Error in Begin Work (Basic Question)

Hello everyone, I am encountering a strange error. I am using ESQL/C, Informix SE 5.0 on DEC Ultrix 4.2a. I have a sql statement $begin work in my esql/c code. Sometimes when that part of the code is executed, it returns with sqlerrd[4] set to 39. According to ESQL/c manual, says offset into of an error. But the SQLCODE is set to 0. I am not using ANSI compliant database or trying to use any nested transactions. Is this something that I need to ignore? I guess it means that there is an error at charecter 39, but my SQL statement is not that long. I would appreciate if you any one can shed some light on this.
