Re: Replication (ER) confusion

Hello, >I read the fine manual (Dynamic Server 7.2), OAG, right? You need the *other* manual, the "Guide to Enterprise Replication." (I don't have the part number handy.) While you are at it, attend the course on ER, and get the student guide. >looked at the nice IIUG FAQ, It is one of the best resources around, but it is not a good one for leading edge things. You could have checked the comp.databases.informix archives and maybe found something in the recent posts. >stared at the marketing talk on the Informix homepage and still am >no wiser... Yeah. Um, sorry about that. Did you complain to the "feedback" button? If not, do! They need all the help they can get. >The manual and all references I found so far define the replication >as a strict 2 machine setup, one master and one slave. That's DR, now called HDR, and is distinct from ER, formerly called CDR. Got it? It goes like this: Data Replication, now called High-availability Data Replication, is the master/slave setup designed for disaster recovery. Enterprise Replication (used to be Continuous Data Replication) is the far more powerful new capability. You can choose to replicate just columns, or selected rows, at different times, and deal with problems in any of several different ways. >So what _is_ Enterprise Replication and am I right in suspecting >that the setup with multiple slaves is not like that what is >mentioned in single slave replication section in the manual? Well, I guess I already covered that. ER is real, and very powerful, and still new. Sign up for that course. good luck, ______________________________________________________ Clem Akins (aka clema@informix.com) Informix Software, Inc (Standard disclaimers apply) International Technical Support Last seen: In the shadow of the Sky Tower, Auckland.
