Stupid Informix Tricks
Posted in 1995
Folks, I just had the pleasure of updating to 5.03.UC5 with 4.13.UE3 on HP9000 systems and thought I'd share you one of the more monumental pieces of Informix stupidity I've seen in quite a while. Some of the rocket scientists in Menlo Park decided that they needed to provide color curses support in this new product series. Of course, they did not bother to **mention** this fact. When the products were installed, tbmonitor barfed looking for "/usr/lib/libcur_colr.sl" on the HP. Seems that Informix wants to use a library that is not included with the HP distribution. A call to Informix support came up with the "solution" of just copying my curses library over to libcur_colr. This worked fine until I tried to compile some code. Now it seems that the 4gl compiler actually wants to **use** some of the color code. After walking the tech through the problem, the new "solution" is either downgrading my 4GL to 4.11 (so that I'll NEVER be able to go any further without monumental hassle) or upgrading to an extra-cost color curses library (that I'll have to specially-order on every new machine I install). How's that for "plug and play". Come on, Informix, pull your head out. -- --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Joe Lumbley(jlumbley@netcom.com) Dallas, Texas author of: INFORMIX DBA Survival Guide from Prentice-Hall/Informix Press ISBN 0-13-124314-4 (12431-3) Now available in bookstores orders: orders@prenhall.com (515) 284-6761 fax (515) 284-2607 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
