is there a fuction or way to do this?
Posted in 2010
Asked whether Informix has a built-in function returning 0 for negative numbers and the value otherwise (for accounting reports). Several people suggested a CASE expression in the SELECT, but the developer/Cognos report writer didn't want to use CASE (licensing limits and a desire for something built-in). Alternatives offered: write a small SPL or C UDR (Paul Watson/Art Kagel, with sample C code), wrap the CASE in a view (Mike Aubury), or the arithmetic trick (value + ABS(value))/2 (Fernando Nunes). No final choice is recorded, though a UDR seemed the likely route.

HPUX B.11.31 U ia64 Itanium (BL870c) IDS 11.50.FC6 Cognos 8.4 The developer for account/hr and our report writer both asked me this question today for different projects. Does Informix have a function that will return a zero if the numeric value is negative and just return the value if positive? It is for a number of accounting type reports. They need to show zeros if the value is zero or less and the actual value if positive. What they are looking for: -12.58 -> 0.00 0.00 -> 0.00 159.67 -> 159.67 I did a quick look at the list of functions and didn't see anything that jumps out at me. Anyone have any ideas how to do this in Informix sql? I'm sure I'm missing something simple. John Adamski Network Specialist Graceland University

Madison, From what I got when both were talking at me at the same time. :-) For the cognos report writer it has to do with some of the users licenses don't allow adding things like 'case' in the select and that he would have to do something multiple times so all the different users could have I guess what would be a function. I'm NOT a cognos person so not exactly what is involved or what he was talking about. For all I know this could be a lot of work. The developer seemed not to want to copy/paste the code or create a proc to do this. I'm not sure he really had a problem but more just that what he needed wasn't 'built in'. I think it was just the normal programmer why isn't it built in lament. You could write a UDR in C to perform the transformation rather cheaply. It'll be about 10 lines of code or less. You could do it in SPL or a Java UDR as well, but for something so low level, I'd opt for C. Art Art S. Just for fun, it's not better than the solutions already provided: SELECT (value_column + ABS(value_column)) / 2 If I still know some math it will work. Is it a function? No. Does it use a function? Yes! Does it matter? I don't know... after the CASE justification I just don't know...
