I think that when a function, that was supposed to return a value, did not return a value, an error occurred. The error might have also occurred when a function returned a value but the call to the function did not include : RETURNING ret_value The 4GL will compile, but the error occurs anyway. It is probably a good idea to use something like grep to search for all function calls where a value is not returned. I believe that the same was true of ESQL/C programs. If a value is being returned, do something with it. As a blanket statement, I would have to say that the newer tools require the code to be more exacting.
