You are not alone. :Informix needs to "team up with Oracle" and both should start :promoting and supporting Linux as the low end alternative to Windows NT. They do not see it as their task to promote or support any OS (any longer). They see it as their task to sell as much as possible of their products on any OS the customer want. They may be in for a rude awakening. :I admire Bill Gates and his business genious, but I dislike monopolies :and :have always been for the underdog. Well Sun is trying hard with Java. Oracle and others do something with NC's, but do not quite grasp the market (they promote no local storage heavily wich is a significant blunder). Non of them may be good enough. Time will tell. :Linux is the obvious choice to compete against NT for low end to medium :database servers. Informix should be more proactive and support it. They sure should. If Windows NT takes over this market more or less totaly as it may be destined to do now MS may become to powerfull on database servers as well. They do invest very heavily in them, and have a long term strategy where the main part is to get hold of the best people in the industry. The competition will heat up. :IT WOULD MAKE my job as a consultant a whole lot easier to recommend and :implement :Informix/Linux/Tcl/Tk solutions (a good database and commercial support :are the missing links) versus having to swallow NT crap. Well, I would use NT as well, and Java for programming, but a high quality alternative on Linux would expand our market significantly. :For the seven years of working with Informix, I have not seen much :marketing or :advertising or promotion of their products. A good example is lack of :Informix books :to show how to exploit Informix's database servers. There are several books by now. Check out http://www.iiug.org for a good list. Otherwise I sure agree that even the last few years Informix marketing haven't been particularly agressive. It did become better though, but there is a long way to go. :Long live linux and tk! Java and you become OS independent. :- Cesar Urquidez Nils.Myklebust@idg.no NM Data AS, P.O.Box 9090 Gronland, N-0133 Oslo, Norway My opinions are those of my company The Informix FAQ is at http://www.iiug.org
