cant start informix on windows
Posted in 2012
Karl edited his ONCONFIG, shut the 11.50 instance down on Windows 7, and it wouldn't restart from Services or the command line, with nothing written to the online or event logs. Jack suggested 'oninit -v' for messages, but it just complained that only IXDBSA/Informix-Admin members can start the server, plus ideas about leftover files in %INFORMIXTMP% or shared-memory conflicts. The real cause: the command prompt had to be run explicitly as administrator; doing so let oninit -v report "Invalid TBLTBLFIRST - extent size too small". Fixing that ONCONFIG value got the instance up. Karl noted the error never reached the online log.

I changed onconfig file Brought instance down via services . Attempt to bring up fails.Tried via services menu no luck From command line with starts no luck. No message in online or event logs. Has anyone ideas what can be wrong? What logs can I look in for infomation
Use oninit -v to start - that will give you some better data. You'll =
have to leave the command window open, but for right now at least you'll =
get messages.
Let me know what you get.

I get C:\\\\Users\\\\oliverk-admin>oninit -v
Only members of IXDBSA group (Informix-Admin, by default) can start IBM
Informix Dynamic Server.
there is nothing in online log last entry from when I brought instance down
15:06:23 Maximum server connections 1
15:06:23 Checkpoint Statistics - Avg. Txn Block Time 0.000, # Txns blocked 0,
Plog used 0, Llog
15:06:24 IBM Informix Dynamic Server Stopped.
I have had that before, and have been infomed you cant start informix that way
on windows.
I have another instance that stops and starts no problem
Karl, I'm not going to hang out on email for hours to help - turnaround is too = slow. IM me as diagnostic on AIM or Yahoo. I've been doing IDS on Windows for that past 5 years. j. So check the status of the user you are running the oninit as (are you =
logged in as Informix for example). Check that they belong to the =
Informix-Admin group.
dbSa? Did you enable role separation?

yes are members of Informix-Admin group Role seperation not enabled
Hmmm, come to think of it I have not used oninit -v on Windoze since =
v10. I suspect that it is oninit that is complaining about the group =
and you aren't even up to the core issue yet. (starts runs as the =
proper user - I think it even has some verbose options - check the info =
center).
We saw a similar problem back when - there were two things that caused =
this sort of behavior - one was improper cleanup from a shutdown - there =
were still signature files in %INFORMIXTMP% that needed to be removed, =
and also an issue grabbing shared memory - a different process had =
loaded itself right in the middle of where informix wanted to load. We =
used process explorer to find and remove that. You can download that =
from Microsoft - search for sysinternals.
Guy Bowermans excellent manual on IDS for Windows - which I believe is =
now part of the doc set, goes through using process explorer to find =
memory blocks like that.
Without getting onto the machine and poking around, there is not much =
more I can offer - call the down systems group.

Hi Karl, Sounds like you had it running initially. When you try to start it from command line (net start InstanceName) does it give any error messages? What changes did you make in the onconfig? Regards, Bryce Stenberg.
ok know what I was doing wrong
Even though i am set up as administrator i still had to run cmd as
administrator
Once doing this i can do init -v
which the shows me the error
Checking config parameters...Invalid TBLTBLFIRST. The extent size specified is
too small.
FAILED
So i fix config file and alls well, I can see the error message
Very bad that this error is not written to the online log.
If you start IBM need to fix this,
Jack was right about the oninit - just permissions stopping me.
I ve a lot to learn about windows - give me UNIX any day !!!!!!!!!
