Look at the number of > super computers now build from commodity hardware for example. While I don't want to argue with your reasoning, I would like to point out that the perception of mainframes being monstrous finicky environments compared to commodity hardware is not entirely justified. I have a client who has migrated to Wintel / blade environment with much less computing horsepower than the average mainframe, and they have huge issues with air conditioning and power conditioning for their commodity-based solution. There is, for example, a finite limit to the number of blades they can deploy in their computing room. If they had not opted for a commodity solution, they could probably get close to two orders of magnitude more computing horsepower into the same environment.
