Use '#' at the beginning of the lines...
You don't get compilation errors because the text with { or -- is treated
as a part of the message you want displayed. You'll also find that any
text before the first message number is ignored (or, possibly, given a
message number of zero -- I've never checked, but it does not give any
problems). All Informix's own error message files include a sequence of
'#' comments at the top.
