Cockup... why math is important...
Posted in 1996
Hi, everyone. Just wanna bring some fun . I always try to read Informix Tech Notes as soon as new issues are out. Recently I have read Issue3, Vol 6 '1996, the article by Steve Deck on Informix solutions for Data Warehousing (apparently XPS). This gentlemen illustrates his nice article with some benchmarks - one of them shows how _dramatically_ query time can be reduced by using multiple nodes. In general - query time was 3 hours, now it is 1hr 40 min after the number of nodes has been doubled . I believe this gentlemen was a bit busy recently so he forgot how to calculate percentage. He says that speedup is 94 % !!!!!! I always thoght that it is below 50%..... At least this is how I was taught. Ironically, Steve accompanies this example with the following sentence: " One would expect ... query execution time to be reduced by 50 %." What a shame.... Not bad , is not it!? Footnotes say Steve Deck has 13 yrs degree in hi-tech and BSc in Operations Reseach ... Cheers, Ilya Bogorad / DHL Systems - London/ UK ( University Degree in Applied Math )
