With lots of individual row locking going on, as might be the case in a stock control application with many users, row locking is usually a very good idea. Page locks seems to require less resources so if your application will work with it that's probably best. Often you will set row locking on some tables and page locking on others. : I am going to create :database and build new schema on Online 7.20 in a few days. : :Since I upgraded to Online 7.20 from 5.03, Do I need to create the tables :with extent size next size in order to keep less than 8 extents? It can handle tables with much more than 8 extents, but you will usually get better performance with few extents. When tables are loaded and laid out sequensially it will contain only one extent even with no extent size spesification. Such "extents" are automatically combined into one. If you make sure the methode you use to load the tables creates only one table at a time (inclusive of it's indexes) you may simply set the next size after everything is loaded. : Does :Online 7.20 handle it automatically? On 5.03, I created each table with :extent size next size in the past. In addition to the usual web sites (http://www.iiug.org, http://www.inxutil.com and possibly some others) you might want to check out http://www.wilsontechnology.com for some nice utilities that releates to extent size setting. : :Thuc Nils.Myklebust@idg.no NM Data AS, P.O.Box 9090 Gronland, N-0133 Oslo, Norway My opinions are those of my company The Informix FAQ is at http://www.iiug.org
